Romance Alive and Well in Los Angeles

by Sheilah Brooks

I love Los Angeles and one of the main reasons is because it never stops recreating itself. A city known for its shock value, it's distinctive when it comes to numerous choices of dating places. With that said, I hate the idea of a traditional "romantic date." You know the ones I mean; the soft lights, candles on the table, easy listening emanates from the restaurant's walls while the waiter shoves the menu at you which of course list the customary "lobster" as their main course.

Los Angeles is the place to shake it up when it comes to romantic dating. From the Bungalow Club complete with individual bungalows, to the very intimate Nirvana on Wilshire artfully decorated with fireplaces and canopy beds throughout.

But who says romance has to be all candles and dark lighting. I personally like the fun dates that include things like pool at places like Break Shot Billiards, (nothing like someone trying to show you how to hold a cue) miniature golf or moonlight bowling. (same principals can apply)

If you've checked out everything you can in Los Angeles, but don't want to travel far, then Long Beach is the place to be. The Pike by my opinion is still one of the best kept secrets in Southern California. Forget about the restaurants although there are a number of them to choose from, but there is also Gameworks if you're into playing things like pinball, etc., or grab a blanket and find a spot right near the historic Long Beach Light House. Plus, the city has several choices of either day or night time cruises. But what if you're on a first date and getting comfy-cozy might not be the smart thing to do, then rent some bikes and take a ride on the beach, or to really make it unique, then check out renting a couple of Segways.

So if you are having a problem finding places for a romantic date, then the problem might not be the city, the problem might just be you.

Griffith Park

by Ron

Griffith ParkSpanning across 4,107 acres, Griffith Park is the largest city park in the United States. In fact, the infamous Hollywood sign is actually located within the perimeters of Griffith Park.

There are numerous activities to engage in while visiting Griffith Park. The park is not only home to the Hollywood sign, but also houses the Gene Autry Museum of Western Heritage, Greek Theater, the Griffith Observatory, Los Angeles Zoo, the Travel Town Museum, the Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round, the Griffith Park Southern Railroad, and Pony Rides. Additionally, Griffith Park also features plentiful horseback riding, hiking trails, and bicycle rentals to enjoy the beautiful scenery first hand.

California’s rugged landscaping provides for a fantastic hiking experience. As you traverse through Griffith Park, you'll encounter many of the native California animals, such as quail, deer, and coyotes. Caution is advised however, since you may also cross paths with some rattlesnakes. In total, there are over 53 miles of trails and paths that are perfect for enjoying a short brisk walk, or a more strenuous hike. The trails are open from dawn until dusk and you can pick up trail maps at the Ranger Station.

In addition to hiking, many people enjoy horseback riding at Griffith Park. There are also pony rides available so families of all ages may enjoy the fun. There are specially designated trails for the riders, however, if riders choose to dismount, they must stay on the designated trails. Pony rides are available from Tuesday until Sunday between the hours of 10:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M. There are also covered wagon rides that provide wonderful entertainment for young children. Whether you are on a date or enjoying the park with your family, you'll find plenty of activities to choose from while visiting Griffith Park.

A Helicopter Tour of Los Angeles

Los Angeles Helicopter TourWhen a romantic dinner just won’t cut it…

Looking for something totally spontaneous and out of the ordinary to surprise that special someone? Whether it’s your anniversary, birthday, or just another date - a helicopter tour of the city is a fantastic experience that’s sure to be a hit (assuming of course that your significant other isn't afraid of heights).

Los Angeles is home to about a half dozen helicopter charter companies that would be more than willing to help you plan that perfect evening. Packages vary from a simple 25-minute tour of popular Los Angeles landmarks and/or Pacific Coast to something a little more elaborate such as a limousine ride, tour, and dinner.

The cost is a little hefty so it’s not the most practical idea if you’re working with a budget. Prices vary based on the charter company but can expect to spend about $150/each for a 30-minute tour and upwards of $200/each for a 45-minute run. Add dinner and a limousine ride and you'll be in for a $1,000 evening.

Magicopolis: Santa Monica

by Ron

Magicopolis in Santa MonicaIn the mood for a little magic?

Located in Santa Monica along 4th Street, Magicopolis first opened its door in March of 1998 with magicians Penn & Teller performing its very first show. The shows at Magicopolis aren't what you'd normally expect from a traditional magic show…you won't find tuxedos, top hats, and rabbits here. Instead, you'll enjoy a highly entertaining live performance featuring comedy, magic, music, illusions, and best of all – audience participation.

The shows at Magicopolis run about 90-minutes and public performances are held Friday through Sunday. Magicopolis also holds shows for private parties, events, and tapings on other days of the week.

Visit their website for up-to-date show time information and/or to purchase tickets.

Parking

Metered parking may be a little hard to come by in Santa Monica, but if you're lucky enough to find a spot, make sure to read the signs carefully. Alternatively, there is a parking structure (#5) between Broadway and Santa Monica Blvd (same block as Magicopolis). Parking is free for the first two hours if you're entering before 6pm, otherwise, there's a flat-rate of $3 if you enter after 6pm.

Will Rogers State Historic Park

by Ron

Will Rogers State Historic Park - EntranceLocated in the Pacific Palisades, Will Rogers State Historic Park is one of Los Angeles’s best kept secrets. One of the most popular and highest paid actors of his time, Will Rogers purchased this 186-acre property during the 1920’s as a retreat for his friends and family. An avid rider and horse fanatic, Will Rogers built an expansive ranch which included a 31-room ranch house, stable, corrals, riding ring, and a polo field. In 1935, Will Rogers was the victim of a tragic plane crash, and following his wife’s death in 1944, the ranch was converted into a State Park.

One of the most popular activities to enjoy at Will Rogers State Historic Park is hiking. Take the easy/moderate 3-mile trail loop up to Inspiration Point where you’ll be able to enjoy breathtaking views of downtown Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and the Pacific Coast. If you’re looking for something a little more challenging, head up along the Backbone Trail into the Santa Monica Mountain. The trail offers a fantastic opportunity for mountain biking, horseback riding (BYOH – Bring Your Own Horse), and hiking – leading you as far as Point Mugu State Park in Malibu.

Will Rogers State Park is also popular for picnicking – there is tons of green space available for you to set up and enjoy picnic (first picture below).

For something completely different, head up to the park on the weekends for an exciting polo match. The polo field (second picture below) is the only regulation size field in Los Angeles County; in fact, it’s the only polo field period. During the season (April through October), the Will Rogers Polo Club holds matches on Saturday – from 2pm to 5pm, and Sunday – from 10am to 1pm. The matches are absolutely free to the public, so if you’ve never seen a game of polo in person, make sure to come by and check it out.

Getting Here

Getting to the park is quite simple. Take Sunset Blvd westbound towards Pacific Palisades and make a right on Will Rogers State Park Rd. You’ll take the road for about half a mile until you reach the park entrance. Entrance to the park is free but there is a $7 fee for parking.

Gondola Getaway: Long Beach

by Ron

A Romantic Gondola Ride in Long BeachIf you’re looking to infuse a little romance into your relationship, head out to Long Beach for an enchanting gondola ride. Located along East Ocean Blvd, Gondola Getaway will take you on a gentle 50-minute cruise through the waterways of Naples Island in Alamitos Bay.

Salami, cheese, and bread are provided for you by Gondola Getaway; you also get your very own gondolier to serenade you. Consider bringing a bottle of champagne along – it makes for a much more intimate experience and they don’t have a problem with it.

El Matador State Beach: Malibu

by Ron

El Matador State Beach in MalibuLocated in Malibu, El Matador State Beach is a small and secluded strand of beach which offers visitors a fantastic escape from the bustling of city life. This local gem is one of three “pocket beaches” that make up the larger Robert H. Meyer Memorial SB – situated along Pacific Coast Highway between Point Dume and Leo Carrillo. It’s not the easiest beach to find, but you’ll appreciate making the extra effort once you finally get there. Lined with gentle white sand and picturesque views, the El Matador shoreline is home to an exquisite series of rock formations and shallow caves for you to explore.

Unless you arrive on a busy summer weekend, chances are you’ll have a good piece of the beach all to yourself. Take this opportunity to bring along someone special for a romantic picnic or to enjoy a spectacular sunset – or both. Alternatively, the solitude of El Matador offers the perfect getaway after a long and stressful week.

The beach also offers fantastic views of the Pacific coastline and it’s great for swimming and/or sunbathing. If it's not a busy summer day, there will be no lifeguard on duty so try to be careful out there.

Getting Here

Getting to El Matador State Beach can be a tad difficult and it does require a little hiking along a steep dirt trail. Therefore, it’s probably not the best places for children and it’s pretty much inaccessible for the handicapped.

If you can’t find any spots along PCH, there is a paid parking lot at the top of the bluff with a path leading to the beach. Parking is $4 and you can obtain your pass from the meter box.
